Nomad Events runs stag do weekends in the Lake District. You get two nights in your own private tipi campsite north of Grange-over-Sands, near the southern end of Lake Windermere, and a full day of ghyll scrambling, raft building, canoeing or abseiling in Coniston.
A typical weekend for 8 costs £165 per person. That covers camping, a full activity day with qualified instructors and all kit, and gas BBQ hire for the weekend.
Stag groups are welcome here. It’s a private site, not a family campsite, so the whole group stays together around one fire. We’ve been running Lake District adventure weekends since 2012.

Lake District Activity Weekends Built Around Your Group
Your weekend
- Friday: Arrive at camp in the afternoon or evening. Fire up the BBQ as people turn up, then settle in around the campfire.
- Saturday: Activity day in Coniston. Our favourite is ghyll scrambling in Church Beck, then raft building or kayaking on Coniston Water. Park at Coniston Sports Club and come back there for a hot lunch, hot showers and a beer at the bar. In the evening, head back to camp or take a taxi into Kendal.
- Sunday: Recovery, pack up and head home. Stay an extra night if you want (£39pp).
We keep things simple, flexible and easy to organise – so you can focus on enjoying the weekend.
Coniston Activities
The activities
Most activities run from Coniston, with qualified instructors and all the kit to keep you warm and safe.
- Ghyll scrambling in Church Beck: a wet scramble up a mountain stream, with small abseils, jumps, slides and swimming. It’s our most popular activity and suits all abilities and fitness levels
- Raft building on Coniston Water: build your raft as a team, then race it.
- Canoeing and kayaking on Coniston Water
- Abseiling challenge at Hodge Close quarry
- Rock climbing and scrambling on Raven Crag (5 minute drive of Coniston)
- Mountain biking: guided rides in the Kentmere valley or Grizedale Forest with our partner guides. Electric mountain bikes are available.
- Underground caving: a guided trip underground (usually in the Yorkshire Dales) with a caving instructor, with helmets and lights provided.
A full day usually combines two activities, such as ghyll scrambling and raft building. Add a second full activity day for £64pp.
We can sort a hot buffet lunch between activities to keep the day running sweetly. There are hot showers and a bar afterwards.
Our activities in more detail
Abseiling
Abseil down slate walls up to 130 feet high, some of it free-hanging. A qualified instructor runs the ropes and safety, so no experience is needed. Pairs well with ghyll scrambling or raft building for a full day.
Rock Climbing
Climbing on real Lake District rock with a qualified instructor, with routes chosen to suit first-timers or experienced climbers. The Lake District is the birthplace of British rock climbing: Napes Needle was first climbed in 1886.
Ghyll Scrambling
Our most popular stag activity. You work your way up the mountain stream of Church Beck, Coniston: small abseils, jumps, slides and swimming. Instructors and all the kit to keep you warm are provided, and the challenge is adjusted for mixed abilities. There’s a small access fee for the ghyll.
Canoeing & Kayaking
Open Canadian canoes and Sit-on-Top kayaks on Coniston Water with an instructor. Suitable for all abilities, and it can be a relaxed paddle or a race.
Raft Building
Teams build a raft from the materials we provide, then race it on Coniston Water. It’s competitive and great for bigger groups, with an instructor keeping it safe. Expect to get wet.
Hiking and Mountain Scrambling
Guided fell walks for all fitness levels. Mountain scrambling adds hands-on rock sections, between walking and climbing, with an instructor leading the route.
Mountain Biking
Guided rides with our partner guides, on valley trails in Kentmere or purpose-built singletrack in Grizedale Forest. Electric mountain bikes are available, which helps groups of mixed fitness stay together.
Underground Caving
A guided trip underground in the Yorkshire Dales with a caving instructor: crawling, scrambling and squeezing through passages, with helmets and lights provided. Bring waterproofs and wellies. Most groups enjoy it more than they expect.
The camp
Your group gets its own private area of our campsite in the south of the Lake District National Park, north of Grange-over-Sands, near the southern end of Lake Windermere. It’s an elevated spot with toilets, hot showers, tables and benches, and fire pits for small fires.
We set up 18ft tipis as your social space and 18ft bell tents for sleeping, clustered around a central fire pit. Bell tents sleep up to 10 and are furnished with natural carpet, sheepskins and rugs. We call it stylish, comfortable camping rather than super-luxurious glamping.
We allow one bell tent per 10 people, and you can add more for extra space. Most groups have the site to themselves, and guaranteed sole use is available for an extra fee. Bring your own sleeping bags and pillows; a limited number of foam camping mats are available to hire.
Food and drink
We supply a quality gas BBQ for the whole weekend. Bring your own food, or order our BBQ Feast (£18pp) for the Friday night. Bring your own drinks too, or have a 72-pint cask of Fell Brewery Hoppy Pale waiting at camp (£199).
Nights out
Kendal is an easy taxi ride from camp, and we’ll give you local firms to call. It has craft ale at Handsome Brewery, Fell Bar, The Barrel House, Factory Tap and Bootleggers, plus restaurants and live music at Bootleggers, Ruskins and the Brewery Arts Centre. Or stay at camp around the fire.
For transport to Coniston on activity day, we can put you in touch with a local minibus firm (extra cost), so nobody has to stay sober to drive.

The minimum charge is for 8 people. The price per person can rise by up to £10 if fewer people share the same tents.
Early-bird offer: book early and get a free campfire pack (2 bags of logs, kindling and firelighters) and a half-price cask of ale.
Booking and deposit
- Email, call or use the form to check dates. We tailor every weekend, so there’s no online calendar.
- A £350 deposit secures your dates and books your instructors. It’s non-refundable, because it commits our suppliers.
- The balance is due 14 days before you arrive.
- We then hold the deposit as a damage and cleaning bond, and return it after the weekend if the site is left in good condition.
